Find answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about the Prowess SAT and ACT courses…
How can I enroll in an SAT or ACT course?
You can register for one of our courses by calling James Addeo directly (518) 727-7105 and providing your registration details.
How do I pay for the course?
You may pay for the course by check in the mail sent to The College Advisor of New York Offices, 3rd Floor, 18 Corporate Woods Blvd., Albany N.Y. 12211. Attn: Prowess Test Prep LLC. Please make checks out in full to Prowess Test Prep LLC. You may also bring a check with you to the first class meeting. Please note: no early bird discounts will be applied to students who have not paid in full by the deadline of that discount.
Do you offer referral bonuses?
Yes. We will take $50.00 off the course price for both you and the referred, if you refer us to a friend who signs up for the same class. We always appreciate you recommending us to others!
note: the referred student must mention your name at the time of enrollment in order for you to receive the referral bonus or he or she must put down your name in the space provided on their registration form. You will also need to call directly and request your discount coupon code for any referral reduction you wish to receive, as we don't just apply these automatically. We apologize but only one discount of any type can be applied per registration.
How is a Prowess course different from any other course?
EXPERTISE-Prowess courses are taught exclusively by 99th-percentile scorers with degrees in teaching or who have been teachers in the past and are passionate about what they do.
STRATEGY DRIVEN-Students who take our courses learn not only how to be successful on the SAT or ACT exam, but also how to be successful on any given exam they take ever. This is because Prowess utilizes more simple-to-perform step-by-step approaches to question types than any other test prep company we know of in the market. We teach our students to take tests systematically to avoid making small errors or stalling out on the actual exam. Through segments like “The Psychology of Test Taking: How Our Brains Work”, our "Think-Like-a-Test-Maker" strategies, and the use of technology, such as PowerPoint presentations, students learn the techniques to take any test with utmost efficiency.
AUTHENTIC MATERIAL-Our students only work with real tests that are approved by the test makers, not the test prep company’s (often poor) “equivalents.” Every practice test question and review question is 100% genuine in terms of what a student will see on his/her Test Day. Even our signature strategy guides were designed to be used in conjunction with real College Board-approved SAT, or ACT Inc.-approved ACT, questions.
COMPREHENSIVE-Prowess is the only test prep company in the Capital Region that we know of that goes over absolutely every concept that is tested on the SAT and ACT. Knowing exactly what is being tested allows our students to anticipate traps and avoid brain “freezes.” We take the time to leave no stone unturned, so that nothing is a surprise on Test Day.

What course materials will I get?
Every student who signs up for a Prowess SAT Course (or signs up by virtue of one of Justin's one-one tutoring programs) will receive The Official SAT Study Guide of the College Board, 2018 edition “blue book” (the only study guide created by the test makers) and our personal SAT course workbooks.
In addition to the course texts, students will get the following supplementary materials:
8 full-length College Board-approved practice SATs with access to additional downloadable tests.
Perfect Score’s Unparalleled Score Reports for every exam to pinpoint areas where the student is struggling most.
These materials will typically be provided at the first class meeting.
Where are your courses usually located?
18 Corporate Woods Blvd., Albany, N.Y.12211 in the offices of The College Advisor of New York on the 3rd floor. Parking is to the left of the building. The front door will be open.
How often are Perfect Score courses offered throughout the year?
We guarantee six courses per year (4 SAT courses, generally scheduled to fit within the time frame of before each major test date or one each in Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer; plus 2 ACT courses, one in the Fall and one in the Spring). You can see our course schedule in full by clicking here.
Note: We may offer additional courses to the six guaranteed; however, these courses will be subject to a minimum enrollment and may be cancelled if that minimum is not achieved. We are happy to create a class specific to your needs provided you can guarantee a minimum enrollment for that class on those dates of six paid students. Please understand that we never want to cancel any of our classes. We will try as hard as we can to achieve the minimum enrollment for every class we offer and you can help, too, if you know anyone who might benefit from this service.
Will there be homework?
Yes. Studies in cognitive research and 21st Century Learning show that homework is the most effective way to ensure that students understand the material that was presented in that day’s lesson. Our homework is usually a brief exercise or a section review just to practice and develop the skills taught during the session.
Completing the homework is a requirement for Prowess’s higher score guarantee. It will be reviewed at the beginning of every session, so it is to your benefit to have it completed on time.
What if a class has already started? Can I still register for that course?
Yes, you may register for an entire course or for just select lessons. If a course has already started, you may still register for select lessons by purchasing individual sessions only. You can select up to 5 individual lessons, so long as the course you are registering late for has not been filled.
Note: students taking the class with tutoring vouchers will not receive a second copy of the materials.
Will tuition be pro-rated if I sign up late or if I plan to miss a session?
Yes. Our new system allows you to pick and choose the sessions you wish to attend. This allows students strong in Writing, for instance, to skip the Writing lessons and just sign up for the Reading and Math lessons, and so on. This is so you are not paying for something your schedule won't allow you to make.
What if I miss a course meeting I already paid for?
Prowess has created several options for making up missed classes to ensure that our students are getting the full prep they need before their next scheduled exam. If you have already paid for the full cost of the course but for any reason were not able to make a class, let your instructor know ahead of time, so he or she can help you find the best arrangement. To make up a missed class, you can choose one or more of the following:
(1) With your instructor's permission, you may be allowed to “sit in” on a future class that discusses the same material you missed.
(2) you can sign up for 1-on-1 tutoring to make up the missed session. Prowess requires a minimum of 2 hours of 1-on-1 tutoring to make up one 2-hour class lesson.
(3) You can come to a future class you paid for 1/2 hour early or stay 1/2 hour later to get any notes you may have missed. This must be arranged and approved ahead of time by the course instructor.
Note: in order to be eligible for Justin's Fix-It guarantee, you would need to make up all of your missed classes prior to the exam for which you wish to apply that guarantee.
What if I miss a practice test? Does this count as a missed class?
No. While, in order to receive our guarantee, you are required to complete every practice test offered to you for the course that you are taking, you do not have to make-up these sessions the same way that you would make up missed classes. Practice tests can be taken at home or with another class when that class is taking a test.
Please note: in order to be able to take a practice test at home, you will need to have access to a printer. Your test will arrive via e-mail in PDF format, or you can download it through the College Board website.
What is the typical size of an SAT/ACT course?
Class sizes vary depending on the popularity of the upcoming test date, but on average our classes will fall within the range of 8 – 12 students. Our classes are usually kept small to make sure we can address the needs of each of our students and to ensure that everyone gets a chance to participate in the various activities.
What is Prowess’s “FIX IT” Guarantee?
“FIX IT” is our higher score guarantee. It states that if you do not achieve a higher score on your actual exam than what you earned on our predetermined baseline for you, we will give you 4 additional tutoring hours for free before your next exam. See guarantee eligibility and restrictions on our terms and policies page for more details.
Is there a money back guarantee?
No. Giving our students their money back does not help them get into their top-choice college. We want to see our students succeed, and we will keep working with them to get that success. Our student's goals are our goals.
How often do Prowess students need to utilize the guarantee?
Our programs are highly effective. So far, 0.0% of our eligible students have used, or needed to use, our guarantee. We will update this percentage here if there is any change.
Do you teach students how to manage test anxiety?
Yes. That is largely the function of our “How Our Brains Work” series. We teach students techniques to relax their breathing, clear their minds, and think of the test like a game, not a frustrating obstacle in the way of their college dreams. Our students gain the confidence they need to be successful so that their nerves play little to no factor on Test Day.
